Job Description

Job Purpose

This job is responsible for the implementation, execution, maintenance, and oversight of the Compliance Program for Japan while providing support to the achievement of the Japan business goals and objectives. An immediate responsibility for this role will be to establish compliance as a key business partner within Assurant Japan K.K. And thereafter maintain the compliance partnership and brand.

The role holder will be responsible for enhancing the Japan Compliance Program, tailored to the specific Compliance risks for Japan business.

In enhancing the Program the role holder will identify compliance risks and the actions required to mitigate them, prioritizing compliance related tasks and activities using a risk-based approach.  Also, s/he will manage the risk profile for Japan and report on the key compliance risks and the status of applicable mitigation to key stakeholders both in the Compliance function and the Business.

The role holder will work with key stakeholders in the Compliance function as well as Japan business leadership teams to deliver on Compliance objectives. Specifically, build and develop relationships with JLT (Japan Leadership Team) and key local staff to ensure Compliance is integrated into leadership decision making and that Compliance policies and ethical values are integral to business conduct.

In addition, s/he will work with the local Japan leadership team in integrating Assurant’s Corporate Compliance programs into Japan local processes, procedures and controls.  Ongoing engagement will be required with the Corporate Compliance team to assist with the implementation of trade compliance requirements for the Japan market, together with compliance focused supply chain and vendor risk management, due diligence and oversight with a view to taking compliance oversight of the trade and supply chain compliance .

Where applicable, the role holder will support key strategic and tactical initiatives including mergers & acquisition diligence and integration, alignment of compliance efforts to strategic goals and objectives as well as applicable growth and expansion plans.

Primary Job Accountabilities/Responsibilities

  • Within 60 days of commencement, establish a 90-day plan on how to establish compliance as a key business partner.
  • Advise and guide the Japan business on Compliance matters aligned to the business model and related risk profile
  • Acts as an independent review and evaluation body to ensure that compliance issues and concerns within the business are being appropriately evaluated, investigated and resolved
  • Initiate development, maintenance and revision of relevant polcies and procedures
  • Implement and oversight applicable compliance policies, processes and procedures
  • Manage the Compliance Risk Framework for Japan, ensuring appropriate risk mitigation is established, monitored and reported
  • Work with key stakeholders to incorporate emerging or developing risks into Japan Compliance framework and processes
  • Advice and guide on Privacy matters with  support from the Assurant Privacy Office in meeting Japan’s laws and regulations for the protection of personal data.
  • Implement controls and risk management efforts for Supply Chain, Asset Disposition and other key vendor groups
  • Engage with Corporate Compliance on the implementation of trade compliance controls for Japan market
  • Perform due diligence and ongoing oversight for vendors, buyers & aggregators and other third parties connected with the Japan business
  • Manage and oversee the approvals process for gifts, meals and entertainment for Japan
  • Implement the annual Compliance monitoring plan and track mitigation actions arising from oversight activities – audits, remote monitoring and data analytics
  • Prepare reports and dashboards demonstrating progress on risk mitigation for Japan
  • Perform data analytics on key risk indicators, monitoring for unusual fluctuations in key metrics
  • Provide training on specific Compliance matters to the employee base across the Japan business
  • Implement integration plans for acquisition projects

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Experience in compliance control environment, policy and procedures and compliance risk management
